Slope Stability & Geotechnical Monitoring
Understand slope behaviour before it fails. One of the greatest hazards in open‑pit and high‑wall mining is slope instability. A sudden rockslide or bench collapse can endanger workers, damage equipment, and halt production. Repeated drone surveys provide an efficient way to monitor slope angles, detect ground movement, and identify cracks or erosion. The Matrice 4 Thermal captures high‑resolution imagery that can be processed into digital elevation models (DEMs). When these models are compared over time, subtle changes in the surface can signal instability.
The workflow begins by flying overlapping passes along pit walls or waste dumps, generating detailed point clouds and Ortho mosaics maps. From these, slope angles, bench widths and berm heights are measured. If a deformation is suspected, thermal imaging from the M4T can help differentiate wet areas from dry ones; saturation can indicate increased pore pressure and potential failure zones. The M4T’s Night Scene Mode also allows early‑morning flights to observe temperature contrasts. Because the drone can operate safely at a stand‑off distance while still capturing intricate detail through its telephoto lens, inspectors avoid exposure to falling rock or unstable ground.
Deliverables and value
-
Benchmark surveys: Establish baseline terrain models for pit walls, waste dumps, and haul road cuttings.
-
Change detection: Track movement by comparing successive surveys; identify bulging, slumping or erosion before they become failures.
-
Crack mapping & seepage detection: High‑resolution RGB imagery reveals tension cracks; thermal data can highlight moist zones indicating seepage or piping.
-
Reporting: We deliver annotated maps and 3D visualisations showing high‑risk areas, along with measurement data that engineers can use for stability analyses.
By integrating regular drone monitoring into your geotechnical programme, you gain an early‑warning system. Spot the signs of slope distress early and quickly. The result is improved worker safety and more informed planning of remediation or reinforcement.
