Roof & Structural Inspections

Drones are transforming roof and structural inspections of buildings by replacing dangerous manual climbs with high-resolution aerial imaging. In fact, roof inspections are one of the most widespread drone applications, enabling inspectors and roofers to evaluate roofs for leaks and damage without accessing the roof directly. Equipped with both visual and thermal cameras, drones like the DJI Matrice4T can survey roofs and building exteriors quickly and safely. Its thermal sensor reveals hidden issues like trapped moisture, failed insulation, or overheated components that are invisible to the naked eye. At the same time, high-resolution RGB and zoom cameras capture detailed imagery of roof membranes, flashing, vents, and facade elements. AI-powered onboard processing and the Matrice4Ts laser rangefinder then record precise locations of any defects.
-
Roof defect detection: The Matrice 4T conducts systematic thermal scans of commercial and industrial roofs, highlighting cold or hot spots that indicate leaks, moisture intrusion, or insulation gaps. For example, a planned flight path over the roof captures surface temperatures in real time, and anomalies immediately stand out in the thermal images.
-
Detailed visual inspection: Its wide-angle and high-zoom optical cameras allow close-up visual surveys of roof details (seams, flashing, drains, vents) once a thermal scan flags a suspect area. The drone can then confirm cracks, corrosion, or missing materials from a safe distance, without the need for ladders or scaffolding.
-
Facade & structure inspections: Beyond roofs, the Matrice 4T inspects building exteriors. It can capture high-resolution images of walls, windows, facade panels, and other vertical surfaces. Its long-range zoom also enables stand-off inspections of taller structures (e.g. towers, bridges, water tanks) from a safe distance, checking for cracks, rust, or structural damage without flying directly into the structure.
-
Data integration: During each inspection flight, the drone logs GPS coordinates and laser rangefinder data for every observation. These are compiled into annotated reports and maps that pinpoint each defect’s exact location. Maintenance teams receive clear, geo-tagged imagery so they can navigate directly to problem areas, saving time and eliminating guesswork.
-
Enterprise-grade hardware: The Matrice 4T is an enterprise-class drone built for inspection. It carries a four-in-one camera payload ,48 MP wide, 48 MP medium-tele, 48 MP telephoto, plus a high-res thermal sensor. The thermal imager works at 640×512 native resolution and up to 1280×1024 UltraHD. The drone can fly between 45–50 minutes per battery and is IP55-rated. It also includes an integrated laser rangefinder for precise distance measurement and supports RTK GPS for centimetre-level accuracy.
The Matrice4T can inspect virtually any existing structure. It safely examines flat or pitched roofs whether on warehouses, office buildings, or homes scanning roof membranes and materials for defects. Building exteriors like walls, facades, roofs of multi-storey buildings are checked in detail, and taller structures can be inspected at range. All critical components are captured in high-resolution data, giving owners a comprehensive digital record of the structures condition. This lets clients plan maintenance and repairs proactively while keeping personnel off unsafe roofs and scaffolding.
