Fence Line Inspections

Maintaining secure boundaries is crucial on game and livestock farms; when a fence fails, livestock can escape or predators and poachers can get in. Traditional fence inspection is labour intensive and time‑consuming, especially on large properties where kilometres of boundary and interior fencing must be checked on foot or by vehicle. Drones provide a fast, safe, and effective alternative. Instead of driving or walking every line, the operator programmes flight paths and the aircraft cover the route in minutes, capturing detailed imagery of wires, posts, and gates from the air. Even modest farms have fence distances that make regular walking impractical. In trials, a 400M section can take five minutes to walk was flown in one to three minutes, and the time savings grow exponentially on longer lines. The drones we use – the DJI Matrice 4 Thermal and the Mavic 3 Enterprise Multispectral are designed to deliver high‑quality visual data and geo‑referenced evidence while keeping people safely on the ground.

How the service works:

  • Flight planning & routing: We design automated routes to cover boundary fencing, cross‑camp fences, and water‑gap sections. Waypoints ensure consistent coverage, and the drone automatically follows terrain to maintain a safe, constant height. Battery changes are planned so the entire fence network can be covered efficiently. For longer lines, flights are divided into sections and scheduled over multiple batteries.

  • High‑detail visual inspection: The M4T carries a 48 MP wide camera and a high‑zoom telephoto camera. The tele lens provides up to 112× hybrid zoom, so we can spot damaged wire, broken insulators, leaning posts or obstructions from a safe distance. The M4T also includes a laser rangefinder to log the exact location of each defect. The M3M adds a 20 MP RGB camera and four multispectral bands (green, red, red‑edge and near‑infrared). These multispectral channels help us identify vegetation encroachment along fences and areas where weeds or shrubs might conceal damage. Drones support centimetre‑level RTK positioning, so all observations are precisely mapped.

  • Thermal & night‑time capability: The M4T’s radiometric thermal sensor reveals heat signatures. This allows us to check fence integrity at dusk or in low‑light conditions and spot animals or people near a potential breach. Thermal images also highlight warm animals huddled against a fence – a sign that a section may be electrified or compromised.

Benefits for landowners:

  • Efficiency & labour savings: Aerial inspections cover kilometres of fencing in a fraction of the time it would take on foot. Staff no longer need to open and close multiple gates or navigate rough terrain, and they can focus on repairs rather than searching for problems. The break‑even point for time savings occurs around seven kilometres; beyond that, drones dramatically outperform ground patrols.

  • Early problem detection: High‑resolution and thermal images make it easy to spot missing wires, sagging sections, fallen branches, and wash‑outs before they cause escapes. Regular flights also highlight patterns of wildlife activity or poacher tracks. After storms or high winds, drones can be dispatched immediately to check for fallen trees or flood damage. The Kentucky guidance recommends increased inspection frequency after storms or deer breeding season and notes that drones help ensure downed trees or water gaps are spotted quickly.

  • Safety: Inspectors remain in the vehicle or at a safe launch area. There is no need to traverse uneven ground or enter paddocks with unpredictable animals. The M4T’s optional spotlight and speaker can be used to deter intruders or drive animals away from a breach at night.

  • Documentation: Each flight produces a set of geo‑tagged photos and videos with the exact location of every observation. This makes it easy to plan repairs and record maintenance history. Multispectral maps show where vegetation management is needed.

By combining the detail and thermal power of the M4T with the mapping capability of the M3M, our fence line inspection service keeps game and livestock secure. Landowners gain peace of mind knowing that their perimeter is monitored regularly and that problems are identified before they become emergencies.
